PURPOSE

It is reported that approximately seven million have reported mental health issues during the past year. We know that this number is not representative of the almost universally experienced traumas among Blacks. Part of the reason that Black under report their mental health issues is that Blacks have been historically mistreated by mental health workers who are primarily white (76.4%). Melanics (People of Color) make up the rest of the mental health professionals in the following percentages: Asia, 10.6%; Latinx 6.3%, and African American, 4.1%; and less than 0.4% are Native American/Indigenous mental health professionals. These statistics and the letters of apology by the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association for continued racist policies and behaviors speaks to the critical need to increase the number of Black and other Melanic mental health professionals to address the mental health needs among Melanics in particular. Getting Blacks and other Melanics into graduate programs is one of the hurdles that must be addressed. Having sound ethical advice about the mental health fields has been lacking in many colleges and universities. Organizations such as the Delaware Valley Association of Black Psychologists and educational institutions such as Lincoln University, the first degree granting institution of higher education for Blacks are critical components of eradicating the shortage of Black mental health professionals. Mental health career days are essential in guiding undergraduates and graduate students into appropriate mental health fields and providing the needed support to navigate alienating and sometimes hostile educational environments. This training will provide students, professionals and the general public with insights from Black mental health professionals.
